1964 Racer

Well after the smash I had at the Phoenix Park Races in August 2009, I've put the racing on ice for a while and decided to put my money into something with a little less risk and that I can get better value for money out of. And so, here is my 1964 mk1 Morris Mini Deluxe!

I bought the car from a guy in Cork who brought it over from Wales in July 09 and never used it. The previous owner had modified the car to make it look similar to a Works Rally Car but didn't really go to extreme lengths, which is great because it would have been a shame to undo all the hard work that would have gone into it!

It had a few unoriginal parts fitted like an A+ 998 engine, later type wiper motor, homemade dashboard, Group 2 arches, 100+ wheels and a few other little bits and pieces - but was largely a standard car.

I was surprised to find that the car was 99.9% rust free but this is due to having had a LOAD of replacement panels in its day - some of which were not fitted very well! But that doesn't bother me too much as I wasn't looking for a concours winner.

So, the plans for the car are to make it look like an FIA spec mk1 Cooper S, with the engine, gearbox, and running gear from the race car.

I have many of the parts already to achieve this but some of the parts will have to be bought down the line.

The car will be used for weekend blasts, track days and possibly the odd historic race or two!

The final spec of the car will be as follows:

Shell:
-1964 Morris Mini Deluxe in Cherry Red with black roof
-Safety Devices 6-point rollcage
-Twin Cooper S fuel tanks
-Standard glass except for laminated front screen

Exterior:
-Morris Cooper S badges
-Morris Cooper S grill
-Stainless bumpers with Cooper S overriders and corner bars
-Stainless rear opening windows
-Cooper S Stainless door window surrounds
-Chrome arch trim

Interior:
-Standard red Deluxe seats (until I can afford something else!)
-Black carpets, door cards and dash panels
-3 clock centre binnacle with original Smiths clocks (will upgrade to Cooper S 130mph speedo eventually)
-Smiths Tacho with dash pod
-Mota Lita John Cooper Signature 14” steering wheel with stainless spokes
-Black 3-point harnesses

Wheels & Tires:
-10x4.5” Rosepetal alloys
-165/70/10 Avon CRZ Sport tires

Brakes & Suspension:
-Cooper S master cylinder
-Braided lines front and rear
-Cooper S callipers and discs at front
-Minifins at rear
-KAD handbrake quadrants
-Standard subframes front and rear
-Ripspeed hi-los front and rear
-Standard cones front and rear
-AVO alloy adjustable dampers front and rear
-Heavy duty tie bars at front
-Minispares adjustable bottom arms at front
-KAD camber brackets at rear
-Standard rear swinging arms at rear

Engine & Gearbox:
-MED A+ block bored to 1380cc
-MED full rally spec head
-MED fully worked crank
-Centre main strap
-Standard balanced rods
-AE 73.5mm pistons
-Swiftune SW98 cam
-Swiftune 1.5 roller rockers
-Swiftune duplex timing kit
-Minispares 2 core rad with auxiliary fan
-13 row oil cooler
-Aldon electronic ignition
-Aldon Flame Thrower coil
-Facet Red Top fuel pump
-Twin HS4 carbs
-Maniflow 2” LCB with straight through Maniflow exhaust
-Minispares lightened flywheel and backplate
-Grey clutch diaphragm
-Paddle clutch
-Minispares straight cut drop gears
-Minispares straight cut gear set
-Standard diff with hardened pin (will be changed to Salisbury LSD eventually)
-3.7 final drive
-Standard pot joints (will be changed to Hardy Spicers when LSD is fiited)

The gearbox has been sold but the engine and wheels are still up for grabs if you're interested.

The engine ran very smoothly when I test drove the car, no funny noises etc. Not sure what mileage is on it though so would take €50 for it.

The wheels are in good condition with perfect Camac and Daytona tires. Will take €100 for them.

Hey Maxi!

The white fella is easily fixed but probably need a full respray at this stage. I've had a few people interested in buying the shell but I'm not too pushed on letting it go. I could live to regret it!

Would love to turn him into a racer again down the line but it might be cheaper to just buy a car already built.

A combination of things has slowed down progress lately...work, weather, delivery of parts etc.

I hope to have the interior, brakes, suspension and a few other bits of trim finished by the end of this weekend as well as having the engine ready to go, bar the set of twin HS4s I'm waiting for in the post!

The other bits I'm waiting on are mirrors, steering wheel, chrome wheel arch trim, air filters, hoses, oil cooler and a load of other small bits and pieces.

Will get more pics up asap!

Thanks for the comments! Still no real updates though unfortunately :(

Got the carbs and my new steering wheel finally but any time I've spent on the car over the last few weeks has been problem solving!

The biggest issue is getting the 7.5" discs to fit my hubs as they are fowling them badly. Will have it sorted this week though hopefully.

One of the other issues has been trying to get my quickshift to work! It doesn't seem to want to go together again after being removed from the racer. Will probably just go with a standard shifter for now.

Hope to have the engine ready to go over the weekend so will try get some new pics up.

Well, I finally have an update!

Ended up getting some 2nd hand hubs from Paul Hickey which I've now rebuilt with fresh bearings and ball joints and fitted to the car. Just need to find the correct bolts to fit the calipers and that'll be the running gear sorted.

KAD sent over a new gearstick as the last one was dodgy so will have the gear linkage fitted soon.

Carbs are now on the engine and will hopefully have it ready to fire this weekend.

Still have to finish off the interior with 2 new purchases:

I still have that wiper motor if you need it, I brought it to the Kilmainham Jail run, but had to bring it home again. :roll:
